Narrated Ibn Mas`ud:I heard a person reciting a (Qur'anic) Verse in a certain way, and I had heard the Prophet (ﷺ) reciting the same Verse in a different way. So I took him to the Prophet (ﷺ) and informed him of that but I noticed the sign of disapproval on his face, and then he said, "Both of you are correct, so don't differ, for the nations before you differed, so they were destroyed

And the companions of the thicket [i.e., the people of Madyan] were [also] wrongdoers, 78 So We took retribution from them, and indeed, both [cities] are on a clear highway. 79 And certainly did the companions of al-Ḥijr [i.e., the Thamūd] deny the messengers. 80 And We gave them Our signs, but from them they were turning away. 81 And they used to carve from the mountains, houses, feeling secure. 82 But the shriek seized them at early morning, 83 So nothing availed them [from] what they used to earn. 84

Khattab (Allah be pleased with him), and said: Should I not strike his neck? Upon this he said: No. Then he turned away, and Khalid the Sword of Allah stood up against him, and said: Prophet of Allah. shall I not strike off his neck? He said, No, and then said: A people would rise from his progeny who would recite the Book of Allah glibly and fluently.
