Opening the verse
وَبَـٰرَكْنَا عَلَيْهِ وَعَلَىٰٓ إِسْحَـٰقَ ۚ وَمِن ذُرِّيَّتِهِمَا مُحْسِنٌ وَظَالِمٌ لِّنَفْسِهِۦ مُبِينٌ
And We blessed him and Isaac. But among their descendants is the doer of good and the clearly unjust to himself [i.e., sinner].
Scholars differ
Scholars differ on which son was to be sacrificed: most say Ismail — Ishaq's birth is announced only after this story (37:112) — while some said Ishaq.
